The Department of Commerce, was established, on 6 th January 1955, to cater immensely to the growing needs of the women students. The college named after the grand memory of Late PanditSivanathSastri, an illustrious son of Bengal, was affiliated to the University of Calcutta in
the year 1961. During the period of past 50 years and more the Women’s Branch of Commerce of SivanathSastri College, always, looks forward to make education more utilitarian in the backdrop of progressive expansion of trade, commerce & industry.

The Department offers under graduation courses in B.Com (Hons.) (under CBCS/ CCF) curriculum under University of Calcutta. The department is enriched with faculties having outstanding track records of academic achievements, like, Ph.D., publication of books and research articles and also practical knowledge of industry which have contributed immensely towards the upliftment of teaching standard of this department. The department has proved itself as an avian of success over more than two decades in the recent past and it is because of the unique results of the students of this department. The department is enriched with top rank holders securing rank positions under University of Calcutta. The commendable performance of the students under Semesterized B.Com. (Hons.) Examination, have added to glory of the college to be one of the top ranking colleges in South Calcutta.In addition, the students of the department, are, enlightened further, to progression to higher studies like, post-graduation, professional courses, M.B.A., research, banking and many others.

The students of the Department of Commerce of Sivanath Sastri College have proved their worth in securing quality placements in their job profile in varied strata of social life, be it industry, educational institution or in other social sectors. The Department in particular and the College in general is proud of the fact that the alumni of this Commerce Department have had occupied important positions in leading educational institutions like schools, colleges and universities and also important positions in leading Multinational Corporations, Start-up Entrepreneursthus ceaselessly contributing towards the enrichment of the socio-economic paradigm of life.

Departmental Events and workshop

  • Sharmishtha Banerjee presented a seminar on Global Links in association with Tupperware and Rollins College
  • Dipanjan Mukherjee Regional Manager, ICICI Direct Center for Financial Learning conducted a business game named ‘Stock MIND Season 3, Quest for the Best Budding Investor’.
  • Sitangshu Khatua and Prof Swagata Sengupta, Faculty-MEC delivered a talk on the 2-year full-time MBA-course for higher studies in Management at the Post-Graduate Level at Heritage Business School, in Eastern India.
  • Subhash Mishra Asst. Manager IBS ICFAI Group, Marketing Team-Kolkata Campus presented a seminar on ‘Acquiring Live Skills through Management Education’
  • Kamal Ghosh Ray, Prof. of Finance, Vignana Jyothi Institute of Management,(AICTE approved), Ministry of HRD. Govt. of India Hyderabad presented a seminar and highlighted the prospects of MBA to broaden the outlook of the students towards higher education.
  • A Presentation on “Higher Education in France” was organised by Amitava Das, Co-ordinator at Campus France Kolkata in association with French Embassy in India, to promote higher education in various Universities of France.
  • A talk was delivered by Riddhiman Sarkar, Sr. Counsellor at BML Munjal University (BMU), Hero Group to all 3 Year’s Students of Commerce Department. It was aimed at encouraging the students to take up Forensic Accounting as a career option.
  • An aptitude test was organized by the Faculties of Brainware Computer Centre for all students of Commerce Department. Selected candidates were later on offered a scholarship for any course which they would choose to take up with Brainware.
