NSS Activities for 2018-19: Annual Report

 The NSS Unit is in operation in this college since 18.12.2015. The unit has dedicated, enthusiastic, volunteers, ready to respond and participate in every possible way towards serving the community.

Regular Activities

Thalassemia Awareness Programme:

Volunteers of the NSS Unit of this college participated in Thalassemia Awareness Programme organised by Gokhale Memorial Girls’ School and Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital on 7th May 2018. A number of 30 NSS volunteers were present on that event. The doctors and resource persons have given a detailed discussion on Thalassemia and its prevention methods.

Thalassemia Screening Camp:

A ‘Thalassemia Scerrning Camp’ was organised in Sivanath Sastri College on 28th July 2018 in collaboration with Sivanath Sastri College Alumni Association. A team of technicians and doctors from National Medical College and Hospital visited our college to collect blood samples from interested students. As many as 105 persons registered for the programme including NSS volunteers. The samples were tested in the laboratory of the hospital and the results were distributed to the students at a later date. The team of doctors also met the students who tested positive for thalassemia personally to make them aware about the disease and cautioned them about what needs to be done to minimise the impact on the society.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Wetland conservation awareness programme:

The NSS unit of Sivanath Sastri College organised a ‘Wetland Conservation Awareness Programme’ on 14/02/2019. A total of 39 NSS volunteers and 7 teachers visited the East Kolkata Wetland. The NSS volunteers have made an extensive survey on the existing wetland and the economic background of the people involved with the pisciculture. There was a detail discussion regarding benefits and conservation methods of the wetlands.

Special Camp

The NSS Special Camp was organised at a slum near our college in Ward No. 92, named Gobordanga at A.T. Chatterjee Road, Dhakuria, Kolkata between 23rd March 2019 to 29th March 2019. The camp was inaugurated by the Principal of our college.

Day 1: Inauguration Ceremony, structured interview with local leaders, informal discussion with the slum dwellers, general observation

Day 2: On demand from the residents of Gobordanga slum, an eye check up camp was organised by Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital. For the eye camp there was great response from the slum dwellers.

Day 3: The Collector of Excise, Kolkata South, visited the slum. There was an awareness programme on harmful effects of drugs. There was also great response from the local people who came in large numbers to attend the awareness programme.

Day 4: Questionnaire survey by the NSS volunteers.

Day 5: The data was analysed to identify the socio-economic condition of the slum dwellers, health and educational facilities available and the problems of the slum dwellers. The slum dwellers mainly identified lack of accessible and affordable health facilities and unhygienic living condition.

Day 6: Sit and draw competition for the children of the slum dwellers. They were provided crayon sets, drawing materials and drawing copies for the purpose.

Day 7: Prizes were distributed after the competition, judged by three teachers of our college followed by Valedictory session.

Regular Activities

Aids Awareness Programme

NSS volunteers participated in ‘Aids Awareness Walk’, organised by NSS Unit of this college on 1st December 2018 on the occasion of World Aids Day. The total number of volunteer participants was 44. They were accompanied by the teaching and non-teaching staff of our college as well officers from local police stations. The walk commenced from our college and proceeded towards Gariahat Crossing. Thereafter it turned towards Basanti Devi College and finally ended in our college. The volunteers carried placards with slogans to create awareness on Aids and address misconceptions about the disease.  Students and staff also wore red ribbons badges.

 

Visit to Students’ Health Home – Maulali Yuva Kendra

NSS volunteers participated in the Students’ Mental Health – Psychological Counselling

A total of 12 NSS volunteers and 3 teachers of the college went to Students’ Health Home – Maulali Yuva Kendra on 07.11.2017 for creating awareness of health problem & imparting knowledge as well as to focus on other health related social problems affecting the students and the community at large.

Special Camp

The NSS Special Camp was organised at a slum near our college in Ward No. 92, named Gobordanga at A.T. Chatterjee Road, Dhakuria, Kolkata between 20th February 2018 to 26th February 2018. The camp was inaugurated by the Principal of our college.

Day 1: Inauguration Ceremony, structured interview with local leaders, informal discussion with the slum dwellers, general observation

Day 2: On demand from the residents of Gobordanga slum, an eye check up camp was organised by Doctor Kanika Sil. For the eye camp there was great response from the slum dwellers.

Day 3: Doctor Anjan Mukherjee from AIIMS visited the slum. There was an awareness programme on Dengue, Malaria and water borne diseases. There was also great response from the local people who came in large numbers to attend the awareness programme.

Day 4: Questionnaire survey by the NSS volunteers.

Day 5: Cleaning and applying bleaching powder to the possible breeding ground of mosquitoes by the NSS volunteers.

Day 6: The data was analysed to identify the socio-economic condition of the slum dwellers, health and educational facilities available and the problems of the slum dwellers. The slum dwellers identified lack of accessible and affordable health facilities and unhygienic living condition. They also complained of irregular cleaning of toilets.

Day 7: A Sit and Draw competition was organised for the slum children. 50 children participated in the competition. Crayon sets and drawing copies were provided to the participants for the purpose. Prizes were distributed after the competition, judged by three teachers of our college.

NSS Activities 2016-17: Annual Report

The NSS Unit I is in operation in this college since 18.12.2015. The unit now has registers 100 dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers annually. The volunteers take active part in various programmes to serve the community. It is recognised that NSS volunteers learn to understand the needs and problems of the society in which they live and to develop a sense of social responsibility.

 

 

 

Regular Activities

Thalassemia Awareness Programme

Volunteers of the NSS Unit of this college participated in Thalassemia Awareness Walk organised by the NSS Unit of our college. The walk was undertaken on 7th May 2017 and commenced from Metro Channel in Esplanade and ended at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital. The walk was followed by a discussion on Thalassemia awareness. Children suffering from Thalassemia also put up a stage show at the auditorium of Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital and were appreciated by all.

 

Visit to Old Age Home

Service to the senior members of the society is an important aspect of community service.  In an attempt to make their daily mundane life more cheerful, NSS volunteers of our college paid a visit to the old age home ‘ShantirNeer’, in Mukundpur, on 3rd October 2016. ShantirNeer houses a total of 28 persons including 16 female and 12 male members. The inmates of the old age home shared memorable moments of their past family life and their current routine life in the old age home. They were happy to exchange thoughts and memories with the NSS volunteers who reminded them of their grand children back home. The residents of the old age home also presented a short cultural programme for our volunteers. Our volunteers also participated in the programme. Sweets were also distributed to the residents. The old age home residents thoroughly enjoyed the visit and insisted on our visiting them more frequently as it gave them some memorable moments with young energetic people.

Visit to Old Age Home

Another visit to the old age home was scheduled on 17th February 2017. A cultural programme was presented jointly by the residents of the old age home and the NSS volunteers. One of the members also showed them handicraft items which she makes out of pieces of paper, old worn out cloth, newspaper and other such discarded items. One member also read out a poem which she had written in fond remembrance of her son who now stays abroad. We distributed oranges and sweets. It was a wonderful experience and our volunteers enjoyed a lot.

Visit to Blind School

  The volunteers also paid a visit to ‘Divine Fellowship Blind School’ on 4th December 2016. The volunteers spent some time with the students of the blind school and played with the primary school children. The visit also enthused the students of the school to sing songs and recite poems for us. Our volunteers also participated with the students in singing songs. The students of the blind school thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with our volunteers. It was great to see their joyful faces. Our volunteers left the school premises with the promise to return again.

First aid Training

  First Aid Training was organised for the students and NSS volunteers of this college under the able guidance of Dr.Purnabrata Goon from Sramajibi Swasthya Udyog. He along with his team imparted first aid training to the students and our NSS volunteers with an aim to equip them to provide first aid support to the local community and their immediate neighbourhoods

The volunteers carried placards with slogans to create awareness on Aids and remove various misconceptions about the disease.  Red ribbons badges made by the students were also worn by all students and staff of the college.

 

Special Camp2015-16

The NSS Special Camp was organised by the volunteers at a slum near our college premises in Ward No. 92, named Gobordanga at A.T. Chatterjee Road, Dhakuria, Kolkata between 14th January 2017 to 20th January 2017. The camp was inaugurated by the Principal of our college.

Day 1: Inauguration Ceremony, structured interview with local leaders, informal discussion with the slum dwellers, general observation to identify the areas of concern

Day 2: Questionnaire survey by the NSS volunteers in the slum households. Structured questionnaires were prepared for the survey.

Day 3: Sit and Draw

A Sit and Draw competition was organised for the slum children. 40 children participated in the competition. They were provided with crayon sets, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener and drawing copies for the purpose. Prizes were distributed after the competition, judged by a panel of judges.

 

 

 

 

 

Day 4: Eye Camp

An eye camp was held for the residents of the slum by eye consultant Kanika Sil. Not only could the slum dwellers get their eye checked but they were also given spectacles at low cost along with the power given to them at the eye camp for those who were interested. The patients with cataract were asked to consult the doctors later if they wished to have their cataract operated.

 

Day 5: Eye Camp

The eye camp continued into the second day. There was huge response from the slum dwellers.

 

 

 

 

 

Day 6: Data Analysis 

The data collected during primary survey was analysed to identify the socio-economic condition of the slum dwellers, health and educational facilities available and the problems of the slum dwellers. The slum dwellers mainly identified lack of accessible and affordable health facilities and unhygienic living condition with irregular cleaning of toilets.  Unhygienic living condition was identified as the cause of dengue and malaria amongst the slum dwellers

 

 

 

Day 7: Recitation Competition

A recitation competition was organised for the slum children. 40 school going children participated in the recitation competition. The  competition was judged by three teachers from our college. Prizes were distributed to three best performers.  Prize distribution ceremony was also held on the same day.
